Plot
This story is set in a world where magic is real and anyone can use it with varying degrees of success by learning at academies around the world. At the very best of all academies, Sistine Fibel, a talented female mage student with family wealth and an attitude to back her up, learns in hopes to become a mage archaeologist. In doing so, she plans to fulfill her grandfathers dream in uncovering the secrets of a floating castle in the sky (AKA Sky Castle) from an ancient civilization which no one knows much about. When her favorite teacher inexplicably leaves, her class gets a substitute instructor who doesn't quite measure up to her high expectations.
Enter Glenn Radars, a lazy shut-in whose only goal seems to be doing the least amount of effort and still being able to mooch off powerful mage, Celica Arfania, another teacher at the academy. After bumming off the woman for a year, she seizes the opportunity to get him a job when a position opens up at the academy. While she only seems to be doing this to get him out of her house, in truth she knows he'll excel at such a job.
At first, he seems to care for nothing, but as time goes on he starts to actually want to teach his students, and is much better at it than most instructors. Instead of teaching new spells, he decides to raise their understanding of magic itself. A new and unorthodox teaching method that most wouldn't understand or care to waste time on, but Glenn pulls it off with finesse. Making it easier to understand, but also instilling a deep respect for the art in his students as well. He has a dark past as a military mage, so he tries, and succeeds in showing his student that magic is dangerous and there are consequences to all actions taken without the necessary judgment skills involved. Rather than thrusting them into the magical world by teaching only what's in the textbook, he shows them little by little what magic can do and especially how it can hurt in hopes that they'll never accidentally do something irreversible. In other words, he teaches them to walk steadily, with the knowledge that a fall could mean death for them or someone else, before they even attempt to run.
While his knowledge and methods earn him respect, he's still a lazy moocher who hides his feeling behind an uncaring or irresponsible (sometimes even weak) facade. This combined with his somewhat-crazy at times attitude, earn him the title "Bastard". Though everyone still grows to care for him anyway, and he shows, while he is strong, he's not unbeatable, and despite that he'd risk his life or even die for his any one of students any day.

Characters
- Glenn Radars (??? ????, Guren R?dasu)
- Voiced by: S?ma Sait? (Japanese); Josh Grelle (English)
- Glenn is lazy, and constantly bored by everything, with his primary focus being sleeping. He becomes the substitute teacher in Sistine's class, after the retirement of her favorite teacher. While he may seem incompetent, he is actually very skilled in magic, but not in the traditional sense. Glenn used to be as passionate about magic as Sistine, but became disillusioned by it due to Sara Silvers' death and his past as the infamous military assassin known as "The Fool." He developed his own type of magic, called "The Fool's World" which negates the activation of all magic within a certain radius, including his own. However, this does not nullify spells that have already been cast. While nullifying the enemies' magic he then beats them using superior hand-to-hand combat skills. He cannot use combat magic coherently due to it being far away from his area of expertise, but he has an in-depth understanding of the concept of all types of magic, which makes him a good instructor.
- Sistine Fibel (?????? ?????, Shisut?na F?beru)
- Voiced by: Akane Fujita (Japanese); Rachael Messer (English)
- Sistine admires magic greatly and wishes to discover the secret of the Flying Castle, which no one knows. She maintains a strict, no-nonsense demeanor throughout, and often scolds Glenn for his lackadaisical attitude. She initially hates Glenn, believing him to be as incompetent as he looked due to his lack of enthusiasm. When he actually starts doing his job, however, she begrudgingly begins to respect Glenn as a highly effective teacher. Her personality and appearance resembles Sara Silvers, whom Glenn was very close to. As the series progresses, it seems as though Sistine has developed feelings for Glenn, but is too shy to speak of them. She is called "Sisti" by Rumia, and "White Cat" by Glenn.
- Rumia Tingel (??? ??????, Rumia Tinjeru)
- Voiced by: Yume Miyamoto (Japanese); Monica Rial (English)
- Rumia is Sistine's best friend who lives with her family. She is close to Glenn, who often treats her well, in contrast to the teasing that Sistine faces from him. Rumia's real identity is the Princess Ermiana, the "cursed" princess who was supposed to die three years ago. She possesses a high level of spiritual essence, marking her a primary target pose by greedy scientists. She remembered Glenn being the one who saved her life when he was the infamous assassin named "The Fool" three years ago.
- Re=L Rayford (???? ??????, Ryieru Reif?do)
- Voiced by: Ari Ozawa (Japanese); Leah Clark (English)
- Re=L is a gluttonous girl with a stoic expression. She is known as "The Chariot", being highly skilled in creating giant swords through alchemy. She is an artificial human, a product of "Project: Revive Life", also known as "Project Re=L" which was led by Sion Rayford, the older brother of the girl whom Re=L derives her appearance and memory from. When Glenn and Albert shut the project down, they "adopted" her into the military. She did not know her true origins until later in the series.
- Albert Frazer (????? ?????, Aruberuto Fureiz?)
- Voiced by: Hiroki Takahashi (Japanese); Austin Tindle (English)
- A long-haired military magician with sharp eyes who is known as "The Star". He is partners with Re=L and another former colleague of Glenn, whose aid he occasionally enlists for military operations. In the seventh light novel, he begins to resent Glenn because of him learning of an incident wherein Glenn killed his family.
- Celica Arfonia (??? ??????, Serika Arufonea)
- Voiced by: Eri Kitamura (Japanese); Morgan Garrett (English)
- Celica is an immortal mage and a professor at the academy. She adopted and apprenticed Glenn at a very young age and as such, she puts in a recommendation for him to be the substitute teacher despite his profile suggesting that he is unfit for the job. She forces Glenn to take the job against his will, hopeful that it may provide fulfillment in his life.
